Ernakulam (എറണാകുളം) is a district in central Kerala - Keralam, India, stretching from the Arabian Sea coast toward the eastern foothills. Its headquarters is Kakkanad, while Kochi is its main urban and commercial centre. The district is known for its port, waterways, trading history and strong role in the state’s economy.
Malayalam is the main language, and diverse religious and trading communities shape local life, food and festivals. Shipping, commerce, information technology, manufacturing, fisheries and tourism support livelihoods. Notable places include Fort Kochi, Mattancherry Palace, the Paradesi Synagogue and the Hill Palace at Tripunithura. The district also includes smaller towns, farming areas and coastal settlements beyond Kochi.
Residents commonly focus on traffic congestion, public transport, waste management, reliable drinking water and drainage. Flood preparedness, waterway pollution and coastal erosion are recurring concerns. Other civic priorities include affordable housing, accessible public services and balancing development with the protection of wetlands and neighbourhood heritage.
