Daman (दमन) is a coastal district in the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, India. Bordering Gujarat and facing the Arabian Sea, it is known for its beaches, Portuguese-era heritage and industrial estates. The Daman Ganga River separates the historic areas of Moti Daman and Nani Daman.
Gujarati is widely spoken, alongside Hindi and other languages used by residents from across India. Fishing communities, local businesses and migrant workers contribute to the district’s social and economic life. Manufacturing, tourism, trade and fishing support livelihoods. Notable landmarks include Moti Daman Fort, St. Jerome Fort in Nani Daman, and historic churches reflecting centuries of Portuguese rule.
Common civic concerns include reliable water supply, waste disposal, drainage and road maintenance. Residents also have a stake in coastal cleanliness, industrial pollution control, accessible healthcare and education, and balancing tourism and urban growth with heritage conservation and the needs of fishing communities.
