Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu is a union territory in western India, formed in 2020 by merging two former union territories. Its separate districts lie near Gujarat and Maharashtra, including coastal Daman, Diu island and the inland area of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Daman is the capital. The territory is known for beaches, Portuguese-era heritage and wooded landscapes.
Its communities include tribal groups, Gujarati speakers and people who have moved here for work. Manufacturing, tourism, trade and agriculture support the economy. Silvassa is an important administrative and industrial centre, while Diu Fort, Daman’s historic forts and coastal churches reflect centuries of Portuguese influence.
Common civic concerns include reliable water supply, sanitation, roads, healthcare and education. Industrial pollution, workers’ welfare and housing also matter. Coastal protection, waste management at tourist sites and safeguarding tribal communities’ land and livelihoods are important issues across the territory’s varied districts.
