Buxar (बक्सर) is a district in western Bihar, India, bordering Uttar Pradesh along the Ganga. Its headquarters is Buxar town. The district is widely known for the Battle of Buxar in 1764, a decisive event in the expansion of East India Company power in India.
Bhojpuri and Hindi are commonly spoken, and local culture reflects the traditions of the Bhojpur region. Agriculture, particularly rice and wheat cultivation, supports much of the economy, alongside trade, services and small businesses. Buxar’s riverfront ghats and temples draw worshippers, especially during Chhath. Ramrekha Ghat and the religious site of Brahmapur are notable landmarks, while Dumraon is associated with the early life of shehnai musician Ustad Bismillah Khan.
Residents commonly care about reliable irrigation, flood protection, roads, drainage and clean drinking water. Access to healthcare, quality schools and local employment also matters, alongside sanitation, river cleanliness and dependable transport between villages and towns.
