Bhagalpur (भागलपुर) is a district in eastern Bihar, India, with its headquarters in Bhagalpur city on the southern bank of the Ganga. It is best known for silk weaving, especially tussar silk, and for its historic role as a trading centre in the Anga region.
Angika and Hindi are widely spoken, and local culture reflects the traditions of eastern Bihar. Agriculture, weaving, trade and services support livelihoods across the district. Silk production remains an important source of skilled work and local identity. Notable places include the ruins of the ancient Vikramshila Buddhist university near Antichak and the Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary along the Ganga.
Common civic concerns include flooding and riverbank erosion, reliable roads and public transport, drainage, waste management and clean drinking water. Residents also care about access to schools and healthcare, employment opportunities, support for weavers and farmers, and protecting the Ganga’s ecology while improving urban and rural infrastructure.
