Begusarai (बेगूसराय) is a district in north-central Bihar, India, on the northern bank of the Ganga. Its headquarters is Begusarai town. The district is known for its agricultural landscape, the industrial centre of Barauni, and a long history of political and cultural activity.
Hindi is widely used, alongside local speech varieties including Angika. Farming, trade, transport and industry support the economy, with Barauni’s oil refinery and fertiliser industry especially prominent. Religious festivals, folk traditions and local markets shape everyday life. Kanwar Lake, also known as Kabar Tal, is a major wetland and bird habitat, while Simaria on the Ganga is an important pilgrimage site.
Common civic concerns include flood protection, drainage, safe drinking water, road maintenance and access to healthcare and education. Residents also care about employment, industrial pollution and reliable public services. Wetland conservation, agricultural livelihoods and balancing industrial growth with environmental protection are significant district-wide issues.
