Araria (अररिया) is a district in northeastern Bihar, India, bordering Nepal and forming part of the Purnia division. Its headquarters is Araria town. The district is known for its fertile plains, agricultural communities and cross-border connections. Rivers including the Parman shape the landscape, while seasonal flooding affects many settlements.
The population includes diverse Hindu and Muslim communities, with Hindi, Urdu and regional languages spoken locally. Farming, agricultural labour, small businesses and trade support livelihoods; rice, maize and jute are important crops. Forbesganj is a major commercial centre, and Jogbani serves as a gateway to Nepal. Local markets, religious sites and festivals are important gathering points, while the district is associated with celebrated Hindi writer Phanishwar Nath Renu.
Common civic concerns include flood protection, drainage, reliable roads and access to healthcare and education. Residents also seek better sanitation, safe drinking water, agricultural support and local employment opportunities that reduce the need to migrate for work.
