West Tripura (পশ্চিম ত্রিপুরা) is a district in western Tripura, India, bordering Bangladesh. Its headquarters, Agartala, is also the state capital. The district is known for its administrative importance, royal heritage and cross-border connections, with urban neighbourhoods surrounded by villages and agricultural land.
Bengali-speaking communities and indigenous Tripuri communities contribute to local life through their languages, food, festivals and traditions. Government services, trade, small businesses and agriculture support the economy. Prominent landmarks include Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala, now a museum, and the nearby Chaturdasha Devata Temple at Old Agartala, associated with Kharchi Puja. The Akhaura border crossing is important for movement and trade with Bangladesh.
Common civic concerns include road maintenance, traffic congestion, drainage, seasonal flooding and waste collection. Residents also care about reliable water and electricity, accessible healthcare, school quality and jobs for young people. Managing urban growth while improving services in rural areas is a continuing priority.
