West Sikkim (पश्चिमी सिक्किम) is a former district in western Sikkim, India, bordering Nepal. Its territory was reorganised into Gyalshing and Soreng districts in 2021. Known for forested Himalayan slopes, monasteries and views of Kangchenjunga, the area remains widely recognised by its older district name, especially in tourism.
Lepcha, Bhutia and Nepali-speaking communities contribute to the region’s languages, festivals and everyday culture. Farming, horticulture, tourism and small businesses support livelihoods, with cardamom among the important crops. Gyalshing is an administrative and commercial centre, while Pelling attracts visitors. Notable heritage and natural sites include Pemayangtse Monastery, the ruins of Rabdentse, Khecheopalri Lake and Yuksom, Sikkim’s first capital.
Common civic concerns include reliable roads, landslide preparedness, drinking water, healthcare access and educational opportunities in remote settlements. Residents also have a stake in employment, farm incomes, waste management and tourism that protects forests, sacred sites and local water sources while supporting community livelihoods.
