West Godavari (పశ్చిమ గోదావరి) is a coastal district in Andhra Pradesh, India, with its administrative headquarters at Bhimavaram. Its boundaries changed during the state’s district reorganisation in 2022. Known for its fertile delta landscape, paddy fields, coconut groves and aquaculture ponds, the district has strong connections to the Godavari river system and the Bay of Bengal.
Telugu is the main language, and everyday life reflects coastal Andhra traditions in food, festivals and the arts. Agriculture, fisheries, aquaculture, food processing and trade support the economy. Bhimavaram, Tadepalligudem, Palakollu and Narasapuram are important urban centres. Notable landmarks include the Someswara temple at Gunupudi in Bhimavaram and the Ksheerarama temple at Palakollu.
Common civic concerns include irrigation and drainage, flood and cyclone preparedness, drinking-water quality, sanitation and road maintenance. Residents also care about farm and aquaculture livelihoods, pollution control, access to healthcare and education, and employment opportunities for young people.
