Wardha (वर्धा) is a district in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region, with its headquarters in Wardha city. It is known for its close association with Mahatma Gandhi and India’s independence movement. Sevagram, near Wardha city, became Gandhi’s home and an important centre of nationalist activity.
Marathi is the main language, and agriculture shapes much of the district’s economy and rural life. Cotton and soybean are important crops, alongside trade, agricultural processing and services. Gandhian traditions, khadi and village industries remain part of its cultural identity. Notable landmarks include Sevagram Ashram and the prayer site at Bapu Kuti, while nearby Pavnar is associated with Vinoba Bhave and his work for social reform.
Common civic concerns include reliable irrigation, drinking water, farm incomes and access to markets. Residents also care about road maintenance, public transport, healthcare, education and employment opportunities. In towns, sanitation, waste collection and drainage are practical priorities, alongside preserving the district’s historic sites.
