Viluppuram (விழுப்புரம்) is a district in northern Tamil Nadu, India, with its administrative headquarters in Viluppuram town. It lies inland from Puducherry and includes a stretch of the Bay of Bengal coast. The district is known for its agricultural landscape, historic temples and forts, and transport links connecting Chennai with other parts of Tamil Nadu.
Tamil is the main language, and farming, trade and services support many livelihoods. Paddy, groundnut and sugarcane are among the crops grown here. Village festivals, temple traditions and weekly markets shape local cultural life. Notable landmarks include Gingee Fort, an imposing hill-fort complex, and the temples at Tiruvakkarai. Auroville extends into the district near Puducherry.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, irrigation, farm incomes and access to healthcare and education. Residents also care about road maintenance, public transport, drainage and waste management. Coastal communities face concerns around fishing livelihoods, erosion and severe weather, while growing settlements need coordinated infrastructure planning.
