Vidisha (विदिशा) is a district in central Madhya Pradesh, India, northeast of Bhopal. Its headquarters is Vidisha city, near the Betwa River. The district is known for its ancient settlements, archaeological sites and agricultural landscape, linking everyday rural life with a long history of trade, religion and art.
Hindi is widely spoken, alongside regional speech associated with Malwa and Bundelkhand. Farming supports much of the economy, with wheat, soybean and pulses among important crops; local markets, services and agricultural trade provide other livelihoods. Notable landmarks include the Udayagiri caves, celebrated for their Gupta-period carvings, and the Heliodorus pillar near Vidisha city. The Udayeshwara temple at Udaypur is another important heritage site.
Common civic concerns include reliable irrigation, drinking water, road maintenance, sanitation and access to healthcare and education. Residents also care about crop prices, employment opportunities and transport connections. Protecting historic monuments while improving visitor facilities is an important local consideration.
