Uttarkashi (उत्तरकाशी) is a Himalayan district in northern Uttarakhand, India, bordering Tibet and Himachal Pradesh. Its headquarters is Uttarkashi town, on the Bhagirathi River. The district is known for Gangotri and Yamunotri, major Hindu pilgrimage destinations associated with the Ganga and Yamuna, as well as mountain landscapes, forests and trekking routes.
Garhwali language and traditions shape much of local life, alongside distinctive cultures in high-altitude valleys. Farming, horticulture, livestock rearing, tourism and pilgrimage services support livelihoods. Notable landmarks include the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Uttarkashi town, Gangotri National Park and the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. Seasonal travel brings visitors and business opportunities but also pressure on infrastructure.
Common civic concerns include landslides, flash floods, road safety and disaster preparedness. Residents also care about reliable healthcare, schools, drinking water, waste management and mobile connectivity in remote settlements. Balancing roads, hydropower and tourism development with ecological protection, local livelihoods and employment opportunities remains important.
