Uttara Kannada (ಉತ್ತರ ಕನ್ನಡ) is a district in northwestern Karnataka, India, with Karwar as its administrative headquarters. Stretching from the Arabian Sea coast into the Western Ghats, it is known for beaches, forested hills, rivers and rich biodiversity. Its coastal and inland landscapes support distinct ways of life.
Kannada and Konkani are widely spoken, alongside other local languages. Fishing, farming, horticulture, tourism and forest-linked livelihoods shape the economy, while Karwar also has a major naval presence. Yakshagana performances, religious festivals and coastal cuisine contribute to its cultural identity. Notable places include Gokarna, Murudeshwar, Banavasi and the forests around Dandeli and Kali Tiger Reserve.
Common civic concerns include road connectivity, reliable public transport, healthcare access and employment opportunities. Residents also engage with coastal erosion, monsoon flooding, landslides, waste management and drinking-water supply. Balancing conservation with tourism, infrastructure and local livelihoods is an important district-wide issue.
