Uttar Dinajpur (North Dinajpur), locally called উত্তর দিনাজপুর, is a district in northern West Bengal, India. It borders Bangladesh and Bihar, with its headquarters at Raiganj. Created in 1992 when West Dinajpur was divided, it is known for its agricultural landscape and the Raiganj Wildlife Sanctuary, popularly called Kulik Bird Sanctuary.
The district’s communities reflect Bengali and neighbouring regional influences, with varied languages, religious traditions and festivals. Farming, agricultural trade, small businesses and services support livelihoods; rice, jute and maize are important crops. Raiganj and Islampur are major urban centres. Kulik’s nesting waterbirds make the sanctuary a notable natural landmark and visitor destination.
Common civic concerns include rural roads, drainage, seasonal flooding, reliable drinking water and access to healthcare and education. Residents also care about farm prices, irrigation, employment opportunities and transport connections. Managing urban growth and waste, while protecting wetlands and bird habitats, is important for the district’s development.
