Upper Siang is a district in northern Arunachal Pradesh, India, bordering Tibet to the north. Its headquarters is Yingkiong. Named after the Siang River, which flows through steep mountain valleys before joining the Brahmaputra river system downstream, the district is known for forested hills, remote settlements and striking river landscapes.
Adi communities form an important part of local society, alongside other Indigenous groups. Community festivals, weaving and oral traditions remain significant cultural expressions. Farming, horticulture, government services and small businesses support livelihoods, while tourism offers opportunities linked to scenery and outdoor activities. Yingkiong and Tuting are important centres, and the Siang valley is the district’s defining natural landmark.
Common civic concerns include reliable roads and bridges, access to healthcare and schools, electricity and mobile connectivity, and preparedness for floods and landslides. Residents also care about livelihood opportunities, protection of forests and customary land, and the potential effects of large hydropower projects on communities and the river.
