Ukhrul (উকুরুল) is a hill district in northeastern Manipur, India, with its headquarters at Ukhrul town. It is known for its mountain landscapes, Tangkhul Naga heritage and the rare Shirui lily, associated with the Shirui hills. Forests, villages and winding hill roads shape much of the district’s character.
Tangkhul Naga communities form a major part of the population, with strong village institutions and traditions of music, dance, weaving and festivals. Christianity plays an important role in community life. Agriculture, horticulture, small businesses and public employment support livelihoods, while tourism offers opportunities linked to local culture and scenery. Shirui Peak is a prominent natural landmark.
Common civic concerns include reliable roads, drinking water, electricity, healthcare and access to education across scattered hill settlements. Residents also care about employment opportunities for young people, market access for farmers and dependable communications. Forest protection, waste management and responsible tourism matter alongside land rights, local governance and community peace.
