Ujjain district (उज्जैन) lies in the Malwa region of western Madhya Pradesh, India. Its headquarters, Ujjain city, stands on the Shipra River and is an important Hindu pilgrimage centre. The district is best known for the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple and the Simhastha gathering, held in Ujjain roughly every twelve years.
Hindi and Malvi are widely spoken, and local culture reflects Malwa’s religious traditions, festivals and food. Farming, particularly soybean and wheat cultivation, supports much of the rural economy, alongside trade, services and pilgrimage tourism. Prominent landmarks in Ujjain city include Ram Ghat, Kal Bhairav Temple and the historic observatory, which reflects the city’s longstanding association with astronomy.
Common civic concerns include keeping the Shipra clean, reliable drinking water, sanitation, road maintenance and public transport. Residents also have a stake in crowd management during major festivals, protection of historic sites, agricultural livelihoods, healthcare access and balanced development across urban neighbourhoods and rural settlements.
