Udham Singh Nagar (उधम सिंह नगर) is a district in Uttarakhand’s Terai plains, bordering Uttar Pradesh and Nepal. Its headquarters is Rudrapur. Named after freedom fighter Udham Singh, the district is known for fertile farmland, industrial centres and its role as a gateway between the plains and the Kumaon hills.
Its population includes Kumaoni, Punjabi, Bengali and other communities, reflected in local languages, food and festivals. Agriculture, manufacturing, trade and transport support the economy, with Rudrapur and Kashipur serving as major industrial centres. Pantnagar is known for its agricultural university. Notable religious sites include Nanakmatta Sahib and the Chaiti Devi temple near Kashipur.
Common civic concerns include road maintenance, traffic congestion, drainage and flooding during the monsoon. Residents also care about reliable water supplies, sanitation, healthcare, education and employment. Balancing industrial growth with pollution control, protecting agricultural livelihoods and improving services in expanding towns are important district-wide priorities.
