Tumakuru (Tumkur), locally written as ತುಮಕೂರು, is a district in southern Karnataka, India, northwest of Bengaluru. Its headquarters is Tumakuru city. The district is known for agriculture, educational institutions and growing industry, with road and rail links connecting it to Bengaluru and other parts of the state.
Kannada is the main language, and local culture includes temple festivals, village fairs and varied religious traditions. Farming, dairy production, trade and manufacturing support livelihoods; coconuts and millets are important crops. Notable places include Siddaganga Matha, a religious and educational institution near Tumakuru city, the hilltop pilgrimage site of Devarayanadurga and the historic fort at Madhugiri.
Residents commonly care about reliable drinking water, irrigation and groundwater availability, especially during dry periods. Other civic priorities include rural roads, public transport, waste management, healthcare and school facilities. Industrial development, employment opportunities and the effects of urban growth on farmland and local infrastructure also shape public discussion.
