Tiruvannamalai (திருவண்ணாமலை) is an inland district in northern Tamil Nadu, India, with its headquarters in Tiruvannamalai town. It is best known for the sacred Arunachala hill and Arunachaleswarar Temple, a major centre of Shiva worship. The Karthigai Deepam festival and regular girivalam walks around the hill attract large numbers of pilgrims.
Tamil is the main language, and life across the district combines farming, small-town commerce and pilgrimage-related services. Paddy, groundnut and other crops support rural livelihoods, alongside weaving, trade and small enterprises. Spiritual institutions, including Sri Ramanasramam, contribute to the district’s identity. Other notable places include the historic temple town of Polur and the scenic Jawadhu Hills, home to tribal communities.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, irrigation, roads, public transport, healthcare and employment opportunities. Residents also have a stake in protecting water bodies and hill environments, improving waste management, and managing festival crowds while maintaining access to everyday services.
