Tirunelveli (திருநெல்வேலி) is a district in southern Tamil Nadu, India, stretching from the Western Ghats towards the plains of the Thamirabarani River. Tirunelveli city is its administrative headquarters. The district is known for its river-supported farming, historic temples, distinctive halwa and strong Tamil literary and cultural traditions.
Tamil is the main language, and village communities and urban neighbourhoods share a lively calendar of religious festivals and local markets. Agriculture, trade, education and services support the economy, alongside industrial activity. Paddy and bananas are important crops in irrigated areas. Notable landmarks include the Nellaiappar–Kanthimathi Amman Temple in Tirunelveli city and the landscapes around Papanasam and Ambasamudram.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, irrigation management, river pollution and flood preparedness. Residents also care about road maintenance, public transport, waste collection and access to healthcare and education. Employment opportunities and balancing development with protection of forests, waterways and farmland are continuing priorities.
