Theni (தேனி) is a district in western Tamil Nadu, India, bordering Kerala - Keralam along the Western Ghats. Its headquarters is Theni town. Known for fertile valleys, hill scenery and agricultural trade, the district includes the Cumbum Valley and settlements such as Periyakulam, Bodinayakanur and Uthamapalayam.
Tamil is the main language, while movement across the state border shapes local commerce and cultural connections. Farming, agricultural markets and related businesses support much of the economy, with bananas, grapes and other crops grown in the district. Festivals, temples and weekly markets are important parts of community life. Notable destinations include Vaigai Dam, Suruli Falls and the hill landscapes around Meghamalai.
Common civic concerns include reliable irrigation and drinking water, farm incomes, road maintenance and access to healthcare and education. Residents also have a stake in waste management, public transport and balancing tourism with forest protection. Flood preparedness and human-wildlife conflict matter in vulnerable foothill communities.
