Thalassery, also known as Tellicherry, is a coastal town in Kannur district, Kerala - Keralam, India. Overlooking the Arabian Sea, it has a long history of maritime trade, especially in pepper and other spices. The town is widely associated with cricket, circuses and a distinctive baking tradition.
Malayalam is the main language, and Hindu, Muslim and Christian communities contribute to its cultural life. Thalassery biryani, bakeries and the wider region’s Theyyam traditions are notable features. Commerce, fishing, education and services support the local economy. Landmarks include Thalassery Fort, the historic seafront pier and nearby Dharmadam Island.
Common civic concerns include traffic congestion, pedestrian safety, waste management and reliable drainage during the monsoon. Coastal protection, clean public spaces and the upkeep of roads and public facilities also matter. Preserving historic buildings while improving infrastructure and supporting local businesses is an important consideration as the town develops.
