Tapi (તાપી) is a district in southern Gujarat, India, with its administrative headquarters at Vyara. Created from Surat district in 2007, it takes its name from the Tapi River. The district is known for its substantial tribal population, agricultural landscape and forested areas near the Maharashtra border.
Tribal communities shape local languages, festivals, crafts and everyday life, alongside wider Gujarati traditions. Farming, agricultural trade, small businesses and public services support the economy, while sugarcane cultivation and sugar processing are important locally. Vyara serves as an administrative and commercial centre. The Tapi River and Ukai Dam are prominent features, with the dam supporting irrigation and electricity generation.
Common civic concerns include dependable drinking water, irrigation access, rural roads, healthcare and education in remote settlements. Residents also care about employment opportunities, tribal welfare, forest rights and access to government services. Flood preparedness, water management and balancing development with forest conservation are important district-level issues.
