Sundargarh (ସୁନ୍ଦରଗଡ଼) is a district in northwestern Odisha, India, bordering Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. Its headquarters is Sundargarh town, while Rourkela is its largest urban and industrial centre. The district is known for its mineral resources, steel industry, forests and strong association with hockey.
Sundargarh has a substantial tribal population, including Oraon, Munda and Kisan communities. Odia and several tribal and regional languages are spoken, and local festivals, music and dance reflect this diversity. Farming, mining, manufacturing and forest-based livelihoods support the economy. Rourkela Steel Plant is a major employer and industrial landmark; other notable places include Vedavyas, Mandira Dam and Khandadhar waterfall.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, healthcare, school access, roads and public transport, especially in rural areas. Residents also care about employment, industrial pollution, forest protection, land rights and displacement linked to mining and infrastructure. Improving sports facilities and opportunities for young people is another important local priority.
