Sonipat (सोनीपत) is a district in eastern Haryana, India, adjoining Delhi and bordering Uttar Pradesh along the Yamuna. Its administrative headquarters is Sonipat city. Part of the National Capital Region, the district is known for its agricultural landscape, industrial areas and growing educational institutions.
Haryanvi and Hindi are widely spoken, and village traditions coexist with expanding urban neighbourhoods. Farming, food processing, manufacturing, trade and services support the economy. Kundli, Rai and Barhi are important industrial centres, while universities around Rai have strengthened the district’s education profile. Notable heritage sites include the historic town of Ganaur and the Khwaja Khizr tomb in Sonipat city.
Common civic concerns include reliable water supplies, drainage, sewage treatment, waste collection and road maintenance. Residents also care about traffic, public transport links to Delhi, air and water pollution, and access to healthcare and education. Managing urban expansion while protecting farmland and improving village infrastructure remains an important local issue.
