Solapur (सोलापूर) is a district in southeastern Maharashtra, India, bordering Karnataka. Its administrative headquarters is Solapur city. Known for textile production, especially Solapuri chaddars and towels, the district also has important pilgrimage centres and a largely dry landscape shaped by the Bhima River and its tributaries.
Marathi is the main language, with Kannada, Telugu and Urdu also reflecting the district’s cultural connections. Farming, textiles, trade and sugar processing support the economy. Major crops include jowar and sugarcane, with cultivation closely tied to water availability. Pandharpur’s Vitthal-Rukmini temple and Akkalkot’s association with Swami Samarth draw pilgrims, while Solapur city’s Siddheshwar temple and Bhuikot Fort are prominent landmarks.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, irrigation, drought preparedness and groundwater management. Residents also care about farm incomes, textile-sector employment, roads, public transport, sanitation and healthcare. Managing pilgrimage crowds and improving services across both towns and rural settlements are recurring priorities.
