Solan (सोलन) is a district in southern Himachal Pradesh, India, with its administrative headquarters in Solan town. It lies in the Himalayan foothills between the Chandigarh region and Shimla. The district is known for horticulture, mushroom cultivation, educational institutions and hill destinations such as Kasauli.
Its communities include long-established rural populations and people drawn by industry, education and employment. Hindi and local Pahari varieties are commonly spoken, while fairs and religious festivals shape cultural life. Farming, food processing, tourism and manufacturing support the economy, with the Baddi–Barotiwala–Nalagarh belt serving as a major industrial centre. Notable places include the Shoolini Mata Temple in Solan town and the historic town of Arki.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, waste management, industrial pollution, road safety and traffic congestion. Residents also care about healthcare, school quality, local jobs and balanced development. Landslide risks, drainage and construction on vulnerable slopes make environmental protection and disaster preparedness important district-wide priorities.
