Shopian (शोपियां) is a district in the southern Kashmir Valley, in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Its headquarters is Shopian town. Set near the Pir Panjal mountains, the district is known for apple orchards, scenic countryside and its connection to the historic Mughal Road, which links the valley with the Jammu region.
Kashmiri language and traditions shape everyday life, alongside a strong Muslim cultural heritage. Horticulture, especially apple growing, supports many households, with trade, transport and related services also important to the economy. The historic Jamia Masjid in Shopian town and the landscapes around Hirpora Wildlife Sanctuary are notable local landmarks and attractions.
Common civic concerns include reliable roads, winter connectivity, electricity, drinking water, healthcare and education. Orchard growers also depend on irrigation, storage facilities, transport and fair market access. Employment opportunities for young people, environmental protection, public safety and responsive local administration remain important issues for residents.
