Shivpuri (शिवपुरी) is a district in northern Madhya Pradesh, India, with its administrative headquarters in Shivpuri city. It is known for wooded landscapes, historic monuments and its association with the Scindia rulers of Gwalior, who used the town as a summer retreat. Madhav National Park is a major natural attraction.
The district includes urban neighbourhoods, farming villages and forest-linked communities. Hindi and Bundeli are widely spoken, while festivals, local markets and religious gatherings shape everyday cultural life. Agriculture supports much of the economy, alongside trade, services, tourism and stone-related activity. Notable landmarks include the Scindia chhatris, Sakhya Sagar lake and the historic temples and monuments at Narwar.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, irrigation, road maintenance, sanitation and access to healthcare and schools. Residents also care about employment opportunities and public transport. Managing tourism, protecting forests and wildlife, and balancing conservation with nearby communities’ livelihoods are important local issues.
