Shivamogga (Shimoga), locally written ಶಿವಮೊಗ್ಗ, is a district in Karnataka, India, with its administrative headquarters in Shivamogga city. Spanning the Malnad region and adjoining plains, it is known for forested Western Ghats landscapes, rivers and agriculture. Jog Falls, formed by the Sharavathi River, is among its best-known attractions.
Kannada is the principal language, and local culture reflects Malnad traditions, literature and varied religious communities. Arecanut and paddy cultivation, trade, education and services support the economy. Notable places include the historic town of Keladi, Sakrebailu Elephant Camp and landscapes around the Linganamakki reservoir. Kuppalli, associated with Kannada writer Kuvempu, is an important literary destination.
Common civic concerns include road connectivity, reliable public transport, drinking water, drainage and waste management. Residents also care about farm incomes, healthcare access and employment opportunities. In forest-edge and high-rainfall areas, wildlife conflicts, flood preparedness and balancing conservation with infrastructure and tourism are important public issues.
