Sangli (सांगली) is a district in southern Maharashtra, India, bordering Karnataka. Its administrative headquarters is Sangli city, on the Krishna River. The district is known for turmeric trading, sugarcane cultivation and grape production. Its landscape includes fertile river valleys as well as drier eastern areas where rainfall and water availability strongly shape farming.
Marathi is the main language, with Kannada also spoken in border areas. Agriculture, sugar mills, food processing and trade support the economy. Sangli and Miraj form an important urban hub; Miraj is noted for healthcare services, classical music traditions and stringed-instrument making. Landmarks include Sangli’s Ganapati temple, while the district also includes the historic town of Tasgaon and parts of Chandoli National Park.
Common civic concerns include irrigation, drought resilience, groundwater management and flooding along the Krishna. Residents also care about farm prices, employment, road connectivity, public transport, sanitation and access to reliable healthcare and education across urban and rural communities.
