Ratnagiri (रत्नागिरी) is a coastal district in Maharashtra’s Konkan region, between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats. Its headquarters is Ratnagiri city. The district is known for Alphonso mangoes, fishing, scenic beaches and laterite landscapes. Heavy monsoon rains shape its rivers, farming seasons and transport conditions.
Marathi is widely spoken, and Konkani cultural influences are evident in food, festivals and local traditions. Agriculture, horticulture, fisheries, tourism and food processing support livelihoods, while migration for work connects many households to Mumbai and other cities. Notable landmarks include Ratnadurg Fort, Ganpatipule’s Ganesh temple and Thibaw Palace. The district also has strong associations with Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak.
Common civic concerns include road maintenance, reliable water supplies, healthcare access and employment opportunities. Residents also face seasonal flooding, landslides and coastal erosion. Waste management, fishing infrastructure, fair returns for growers and balancing tourism or industrial development with environmental protection are important local issues.
