Ratlam (रतलाम) is a district in western Madhya Pradesh, India, bordering Rajasthan. Its administrative headquarters, Ratlam city, is an important railway junction and commercial centre. The district is known for Ratlami sev, a spicy savoury snack, and for its role in the Malwa region’s agricultural trade.
Hindi and Malvi are widely spoken, and local life reflects Malwa’s food traditions, festivals and markets. Agriculture, trading, food processing and industry support the economy, with soybean, wheat and pulses among the crops grown. Ratlam’s jewellery markets are well known. Notable religious landmarks include the Mahalaxmi Temple in Ratlam city and the Hussain Tekri shrine near Jaora, which draws visitors from different communities.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, drainage, sanitation, road maintenance and traffic around busy markets. Residents across the district also care about irrigation, crop prices, rural transport, access to healthcare and education, employment opportunities, and pollution management around industrial areas.
