Ramban (रामबन) is a mountainous district in the Jammu division of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Its headquarters is Ramban town, beside the Chenab River. The district is known for its steep valleys, forested slopes and strategic position along the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway, a vital link between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India.
Communities across Ramban speak languages including Kashmiri, Gojri and regional Pahari varieties. Farming, livestock rearing, small businesses, transport and government services support local livelihoods. Banihal is an important transport centre, while Batote and the Sanasar area are associated with mountain scenery and tourism. Religious traditions, seasonal festivals and village networks shape community life.
Common civic concerns include landslides, highway closures, road safety and reliable access to remote settlements. Residents also care about healthcare, schools, drinking water, electricity and employment. Road and rail development brings opportunities alongside concerns about land acquisition, construction impacts, slope stability and environmental protection.
