Ramanathapuram (இராமநாதபுரம்) is a coastal district in southeastern Tamil Nadu, India, with its headquarters in Ramanathapuram town. Bordering the Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar, it is known for fishing communities, sacred sites and marine ecosystems. Rameswaram, on Pamban Island, is a major pilgrimage destination.
Tamil is the main language, and Hindu, Muslim and Christian traditions shape local life. Fishing, agriculture, trade and tourism support livelihoods, while overseas employment also connects families to wider networks. Notable landmarks include the Ramanathaswamy Temple, Pamban bridges, the historic Ramanathapuram palace and the coastal settlement of Dhanushkodi. The Gulf of Mannar’s islands and seagrass habitats are important for biodiversity.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, irrigation, healthcare access, roads and employment opportunities. Coastal residents also care about cyclone preparedness, erosion, marine conservation and fishing rights. Fisher safety and fishing-related disputes across the India–Sri Lanka maritime boundary remain significant public issues.
