Raisen (रायसेन) is a district in central Madhya Pradesh, India, east of Bhopal. Its administrative headquarters is Raisen town, known for the historic Raisen Fort overlooking the surrounding landscape. The district includes agricultural plains, wooded hills and settlements with a long archaeological and religious heritage.
Hindi is widely spoken, alongside regional speech varieties. Farming supports much of the economy, with wheat, soybean and pulses among important crops; Mandideep is a major industrial centre. The Buddhist monuments at Sanchi and the prehistoric rock shelters of Bhimbetka are UNESCO World Heritage Sites within the district. Bhojpur’s monumental Shiva temple is another prominent landmark. Local life reflects varied rural traditions, religious festivals and weekly markets.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, irrigation, road maintenance, healthcare and access to education. Residents also have stakes in agricultural livelihoods, industrial employment and pollution control. Protecting forests and heritage sites while improving visitor facilities and local infrastructure is an important development consideration.
