Raigad (रायगड) is a coastal district in Maharashtra’s Konkan region, south and southeast of Mumbai. Its headquarters is Alibag. The district is known for beaches, historic forts and the Sahyadri hills. Raigad Fort, which gives the district its name, was the capital of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s kingdom.
Marathi is widely spoken, and local life reflects Konkan traditions, fishing communities and Adivasi cultures. Farming, fishing, tourism, manufacturing and logistics support the economy. Panvel and industrial areas connect Raigad closely with the Mumbai metropolitan region, while many inland settlements remain rural. Notable landmarks include Raigad Fort, Murud-Janjira sea fort and the coastal destinations around Alibag.
Common civic concerns include reliable water supplies, roads, public transport, healthcare and waste management. Residents also weigh industrial growth and urban expansion against farmland, forests and coastal ecosystems. Monsoon flooding, landslides, coastal erosion, pollution and access to secure livelihoods are important local issues.
