Raichur (ರಾಯಚೂರು) is a district in northeastern Karnataka, India, with its administrative headquarters in Raichur city. Located between the Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers, it forms part of the historic Raichur Doab, a region long contested by Deccan kingdoms. It is known for agriculture, thermal power generation and its fortified heritage.
Kannada is widely spoken, alongside Telugu and Urdu, reflecting the district’s connections with neighbouring regions. Farming, agricultural trade and services support many livelihoods, with paddy and cotton among important crops. Power generation at Shaktinagar is another major economic activity. Raichur Fort and the archaeological site of Maski, known for its Ashokan inscription, are notable landmarks.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, irrigation access, farm incomes and employment opportunities. Residents also care about roads, sanitation, healthcare and school facilities, particularly in rural areas. Summer heat, drought risk and pollution around industrial facilities make water management and environmental protection important local issues.
