Pulwama (पुलवामा) is a district in the southern Kashmir Valley, in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Its administrative headquarters is Pulwama town, south of Srinagar. The district is known for its orchards, rice fields and saffron cultivation, particularly around Pampore, and sits within a landscape of villages, farmland and mountain foothills.
Kashmiri is widely spoken, and local life reflects the valley’s traditions of hospitality, handicrafts and religious observance. Agriculture and horticulture support many households, alongside trade, services and industry, including cement production. Apples and saffron are important products. Notable heritage sites include the ancient Avantiswami temple ruins at Awantipora.
Common civic concerns include reliable roads, electricity, drinking water, healthcare and education. Farmers need irrigation, market access and protection against crop losses. Residents also care about employment opportunities, waste management and industrial pollution. Security conditions and disruptions to everyday movement remain important concerns affecting livelihoods and public life.
