Prakasam (ప్రకాశం) is a district in Andhra Pradesh, India, with its administrative headquarters at Ongole. It stretches from the Bay of Bengal coast into drier inland areas and is named after freedom fighter and former chief minister Tanguturi Prakasam. The district is known for agriculture, granite production and the distinctive Ongole breed of cattle.
Telugu is the main language, and local life reflects coastal Andhra traditions, village festivals and a strong connection to farming. Agriculture, livestock rearing, stone processing, trade and services support livelihoods. Tobacco and pulses are among its important crops, while fishing supports coastal communities. Ongole’s historic temples and nearby Kothapatnam beach are familiar local landmarks.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, irrigation, groundwater stress and support for farmers during droughts or heavy rains. Residents also care about roads, sanitation, public healthcare, schools and employment. Quarrying impacts, coastal storm preparedness and access to government services are other recurring issues.
