Poonch (पुंछ) is a district in the Jammu division of Jammu and Kashmir, India, with its headquarters in Poonch town. Set among the hills and valleys of the Pir Panjal region, it borders the Line of Control. It is known for mountain scenery, pastoral traditions and historic routes connecting communities across the region.
The district is home to diverse communities, including Pahari-speaking residents, Gujjars and Bakarwals. Farming, livestock rearing, small businesses and public services support local livelihoods, while seasonal migration remains important for some pastoral families. Poonch Fort is a prominent landmark; religious sites such as Buddha Amarnath and Nangali Sahib draw pilgrims and reflect the area’s varied cultural heritage.
Common civic concerns include road connectivity, reliable electricity and water, healthcare access, education and employment opportunities. Residents also face challenges linked to difficult terrain, seasonal weather and border security. Support for remote villages, pastoral communities and households affected by cross-border tensions remains important.
