Pherzawl (ফেরজাউল) is a hill district in southwestern Manipur, India, with its headquarters at Pherzawl village. Created in 2016 from parts of Churachandpur district, it is known for its forested hills, scattered rural settlements and strong Hmar cultural presence. Its landscape and remoteness shape everyday life and connections with neighbouring areas.
Hmar communities form an important part of the district’s population. Local languages, customary institutions, churches and community celebrations help sustain social and cultural life. Agriculture supports many households, with ginger among the crops grown. Small-scale trade and public services also contribute to livelihoods. Villages, churches, rivers and wooded landscapes are prominent local reference points rather than large urban landmarks.
Common civic concerns include reliable roads, transport, mobile connectivity, electricity and safe drinking water. Access to schools, healthcare and agricultural markets is especially important for remote villages. Residents also have a stake in forest protection, land management, youth employment and responsive district administration.
