North 24 Parganas (উত্তর ২৪ পরগনা) is a district in southern West Bengal, India, bordering Bangladesh and encompassing much of Kolkata’s northern and eastern suburban belt. Its headquarters is Barasat. The district is known for its dense urban settlements, riverine landscapes and connections to the Sundarbans.
Bengali language and culture shape everyday life across communities with varied religious and migration histories. Durga Puja, local fairs and neighbourhood cultural activities are prominent. The economy combines services, commerce, industry and agriculture, with fishing important in riverine areas. Notable places include Dakshineswar Kali Temple, the historic town of Barrackpore and wetland landscapes around the district’s southeastern reaches.
Residents commonly focus on reliable public transport, road maintenance, drainage, safe drinking water and waste management. Employment, affordable housing, healthcare and education are also important concerns. Border-area livelihoods and security, wetland protection, and preparedness for flooding and cyclones matter especially in more vulnerable rural and riverine communities.
