Nilgiris (நீலகிரி) is a hill district in western Tamil Nadu, bordering Karnataka and Kerala - Keralam. Part of the Western Ghats, it is known for its cool climate, tea plantations, forests and grasslands. Udhagamandalam, commonly called Ooty, is the district headquarters; Coonoor and Kotagiri are other prominent towns.
The district is home to diverse communities, including Toda, Kota, Kurumba and Irula peoples, with distinct cultural traditions. Tamil and Badaga are among the languages spoken. Tea cultivation, horticulture and tourism support the economy. Notable landmarks include the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Ooty’s Government Botanical Garden and Doddabetta peak. Mudumalai’s protected forests are important wildlife habitats.
Common civic concerns include reliable water supplies, waste management, road safety and access to healthcare in remote settlements. Residents also contend with tourist traffic, landslide risks and human-wildlife conflict. Protecting sensitive ecosystems while supporting livelihoods, indigenous communities’ rights and well-planned development remains a central local priority.
