Nileshwaram, also known as Nileshwar, is a town in Kasaragod district in northern Kerala - Keralam, India. Often described as a cultural centre of the district, it is known for its links to a former royal family, temple traditions and the performing arts. Rivers, nearby backwaters and the Arabian Sea coast shape its setting.
Malayalam is widely spoken, and local life reflects the varied cultural influences of northern Malabar. Theyyam performances, temple festivals and other community celebrations are important parts of its cultural identity. Trade, services, agriculture and fishing in surrounding areas support livelihoods. The railway station connects the town with other centres, while nearby coastal and backwater destinations attract visitors.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, waste collection, drainage and the upkeep of local roads. Residents also have a stake in safer transport, accessible healthcare, youth employment and protecting waterways. Balancing development with the conservation of cultural heritage and sensitive coastal environments is another important local issue.
