Nicobar (निकोबार) is a district in the southern part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India. Spread across the Nicobar island group in the Bay of Bengal, it is known for tropical forests, coral reefs and remote island communities. Its administrative headquarters is at Car Nicobar.
The district is home to Nicobarese communities and the Shompen people of Great Nicobar, with distinct languages, traditions and relationships with the land and sea. Coconut cultivation, fishing, government services and inter-island trade support livelihoods. Notable places include Campbell Bay and Great Nicobar’s protected forests. Access to many areas is restricted to protect Indigenous communities and sensitive ecosystems.
Residents’ civic concerns include reliable shipping, healthcare, education, electricity and communications across widely separated islands. Disaster preparedness remains important following the devastating 2004 tsunami. Coastal protection, Indigenous land rights and the environmental and social effects of development, particularly on Great Nicobar, are also significant public issues.
