Nayagarh (ନୟାଗଡ଼) is a district in Odisha, eastern India, with its headquarters in Nayagarh town. Set amid wooded hills, farmland and river valleys, it is known for its former princely-state heritage, temples and traditional sweets, especially chhena poda, closely associated with the area.
Odia is the main language, and local life reflects Odisha’s festivals, religious traditions and rural communities. Agriculture supports much of the economy, alongside trade, small businesses, handicrafts and public services. Paddy is an important crop. Notable destinations include the Nilamadhab Temple at Kantilo, beside the Mahanadi, and the forested surroundings of Daspalla. Nayagarh’s royal-era buildings also form part of its heritage.
Common civic concerns include reliable drinking water, irrigation, rural roads, healthcare and school facilities. Residents also care about employment opportunities, access to markets and dependable public transport. Forest conservation, human–wildlife interactions, waste management and balancing tourism with protection of local heritage are relevant district issues.
